LCVR in the community

LCVR supports a number of charities, both local and national.

LOCAL

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People are a local charity that LCVR support, being just 5 minutes down the road from LCVR HQ.

A big part of a hearing dog’s job is to alert their deaf recipient to simple sounds we take for granted like the doorbell, alarm clock and even danger signals like a fire alarm. Being aware of these – thanks to a hearing dog – makes a real difference in deaf people’s lives. Just as importantly, hearing dogs provide emotional support. Through the constant companionship they provide, they give deaf people confidence to reconnect with their family, friends and community, and embrace the life they want to lead.

Missenden Walled Garden

The Missenden Walled Garden charity provides day support for people with disabilities or mental health issues, based within the grounds of Missenden Abbey in Buckinghamshire. The team of staff and volunteers help members to grow and reach their potential at their own pace.

Working in the garden appeals to a wide range of ages from 17 to 70+ years old. A typical day will include a mix of outdoor work and educational opportunities such as garden maintenance and mower operation, along with indoor activities within the education centre and glasshouses, including art and music. They also deliver external gardening contracts where small groups of members maintain gardens in the community.

NATIONAL

The Silver Line

(0800 4 70 80 90) is the only free, confidential telephone helpline offering information, friendship and advice to older people in the United Kingdom. Available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, it links callers to local groups and services, offers regular “friendship” calls and helps protect and support older people who are suffering abuse and neglect.

NATIONAL

Coppafeel!

Founded in 2009 by Kristin Hallenga and her twin sister Maren after Kris was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer at the age of 23, Coppafeel!’s goal is to give everyone the best possible chance of surviving breast cancer. Education & awareness is key; their aim is to empower all young people with the knowledge to get to know what’s normal for them, and the confidence to see a doctor if they notice any changes.

LOCAL

Social Link

Social Link – turning disabilities into abilities. We are a charity providing social clubs and day opportunities for adults with a learning disability to meet, develop independence skills and enjoy weekly activities.

Without this service the young adults with special needs would be likely to experience greater social isolation and lack of development, marginalisation within their communities, greater dependency on ageing parents and other carers, lack of choices and poor leisure opportunities – in addition to the problems experienced by the average young adult.
